Part 1 in a Series: AI Search Has Shifted to “Human Mindset”

Part 1 in a Series: AI Search Has Shifted to “Human Mindset”

Part 1: The Death of the Keyword

Why Search Has Shifted from Keywords to Human Mindset

Not that long ago, I was sitting at my desk watching the first light creep over the Mountain. The view from my window was fresh and quiet, but my screen was glowing with an email that made me stop mid-sip of my morning coffee.

“I have $300,” the email read. “I need you to use that to get my new business to the number one spot on Google’s search results page as fast as you can.”

Once I recovered from the initial blink of disbelief, a familiar, quiet realization set in. I thought about how many brilliant, deeply capable business owners are running their companies in a fog, trying to navigate a digital landscape that feels like it’s shifting beneath their feet every single day. Unless you have a bottomless ad budget to outspend the competition on pay-per-click ads, getting to the top isn’t something you buy overnight. It takes a strategic, consistent plan executed over time.

They’re pouring their hearts, their late nights, and their soul into a brand, only to open a browser, type their dream into a search box, and find silence. They ask me: “I just typed ‘best [fill in my business]’ into Google, and my site isn’t showing up. Why am I not at the top?” Is this something you can relate to?

If you’ve felt that specific brand of frustration lately, I want to tell you something: You aren’t imagining it. But the ground isn’t breaking—it’s clearing.

The Big Shift: From Robots to Matchmakers

For years, the internet operated on a rigid, robotic bargain. If you wanted to be seen, you had to speak fluent machine. You had to stuff exact phrases onto your website like awkward furniture in a small room—what we used to call “robotic keyword-stuffing.”

Search engines haven’t just updated their algorithms; they’ve completely changed how they discover, evaluate, and connect businesses with human beings.

We’ve stepped into an era of mindset-to-mindset matching.

With AI Overviews and generative search engines, search acts much more like a high-level digital matchmaker. When a prospect asks a search engine or AI for a recommendation, the system analyzes two things simultaneously:

The Searcher’s Contextual Mindset: Their browsing habits, past search queries, lifestyle, values, and underlying intent. It’s all there – your history, ready for Google to grab, and match it with a similar mindset of a brand.

Your Brand’s Full Digital Footprint: Your background, verified reviews, authority, and cross-platform presence.

The goal isn’t just to throw any random website visitor at your homepage. It’s to synthesize a world of scattered information and match a human in need with the exact refuge or service they’re looking for.

What Mindset-Matching Looks Like in the Wild

Consider two very different examples of how this plays out:

The Luxury Vacation Rental: Imagine you own a luxury vacation property where you’ve invested heavily in custom architecture and high-end bedding. Old SEO focused on ranking for a cold phrase like “cabin rental in Montana.” Modern AI search looks deeper: it recognizes a traveler whose browsing patterns signal a desire for elevated comfort and quiet craftsmanship, matching them directly with your site because your footprint clearly radiates that experience.

The Sanctuary for Writers: Imagine an executive, therapist, or author sitting at their desk at 10:00 PM, exhausted, typing into a search bar: “I feel like I’ve lost my voice and I need a retreat where I can learn to write without being judged.” Old SEO looked for “writing retreat Montana” or “book writing workshop.” Today, AI operates on intent. It senses someone looking for deep emotional safety, expert guidance, and an intimate setting—and matches them directly with Laura Munson and Haven Writing Retreats. Haven’s footprint doesn’t just list dates and prices; it communicates sanctuary, mentorship, and deep human connection.

A Quick Word on Tools: Don’t use ChatGPT to do the work of Google. Google remains the go-to for discovery because its entire job is to comb the live, wide web for real-time updates. ChatGPT operates on trained data models—a completely different tool for a completely different job.

In Part 2, we step out of the search bar and look at your actual digital real estate and why relying on social media (especially Instagram) is like building on rented land, and how every invisible detail on your website is telling AI who you really are. Unlocking the Power of Keywords: How Google Connects Your Website to the World

Let’s talk about keywords — those small but mighty words or phrases that have the power to connect your website to the right audience. If you’ve read my guide to mastering SEO (Mastering Website Optimization: Your Ultimate Guide to SEO), you’re already familiar with how crucial optimization is for driving organic traffic. Now, let’s dig deeper into the role of keywords and how Google’s bots use them to index your site and match it with searchers.

What Are Keywords?

Keywords are the terms people type (or speak) into search engines like Google when looking for information, products, or services. For instance, if someone is searching for scenic flights in Montana, they might use keywords like “Glacier National Park aerial tours” or “Montana flying adventures.” Including these phrases strategically in your web copy signals to Google that your site is relevant to those queries.

But it’s not just about sprinkling keywords everywhere. It’s about understanding what your audience is searching for and weaving those terms naturally into your content.

How Google Bots Work

Think of Google’s bots (also known as crawlers) as digital librarians. They comb through billions of web pages, scanning for content and cataloging it in Google’s massive index. Keywords play a starring role in this process. Here’s how it works:

Crawling: Bots scan your website’s pages, reading your text, images, and even code to understand what your site is about.

Indexing: Based on the keywords and overall content, Google adds your pages to its index, essentially filing them under relevant topics.

Matching: When someone searches for a term, Google’s algorithm digs into its index and matches the query with the most relevant, high-quality pages — ideally, yours!

Why Keywords Matter for Website Visibility

Without the right keywords, your site could be overlooked, no matter how beautiful or informative it is. Keywords help Google understand:

  • What your business offers
  • Which audience your content serves
  • Where you fit in the competitive landscape

If your site’s keywords align with what potential clients are searching for, your chances of showing up on that coveted first page increase dramatically. And we would love to help get you there!

Best Practices for Keyword Usage

Do Your Research: Tools like Google Keyword Planner or SEMrush can help you identify high-volume, low-competition keywords. These are the golden tickets for visibility.

Use Keywords Strategically: Include them in key areas like:

  • Page titles
  • Headings (H1, H2, etc.)
  • Meta descriptions
  • The first 100 words of your content
  • Alt text for images – you can learn how easy they are to create in my article here.

Note: Write for Humans, Not Just Bots: Keywords should flow naturally in your copy. Forced or repetitive use (known as keyword stuffing) can hurt your rankings and turn off readers.

Diversify Your Keywords: Include a mix of short-tail keywords (e.g., “flying tours”) and long-tail keywords (e.g., “exclusive flying tours of Glacier National Park”) to cover a broader range of search queries.

Stay Current: Trends change. Regularly review and update your keyword strategy to reflect what’s relevant in your industry.

The Big Picture: Keywords Are Just the Beginning

While keywords are essential, they’re just one piece of the SEO puzzle. High-quality content, fast page speeds, mobile-friendly design, and backlinks all play a role in boosting your site’s visibility. But it all starts with those crucial words that signal to Google, “Hey, I’ve got what people are looking for!”

So, take the time to craft keyword-rich, client-focused content that speaks to your audience and tells Google exactly why your site deserves to shine.
