The New Rules of Discovery: How Search Has Shifted from Keywords to Mindset
The goal of today’s AI search is to synthesize a world of scattered information and present users with recommendations tailored specifically to their lifestyle, values, and expectations.
This is my official “Digital Marketing State of the Union.” It’s a pretty long one with some great examples and tips you can use to evaluate and improve your own digital footprint. So grab your favorite beverage, settle in, and read this from start to finish if you want your business to be discovered and matched with your ideal prospects in 2026. That said, this is centered around AI, which means it could all change before the year is up. And I’m here to stay on top of it so you don’t have to!
The Big Shift: It’s all About Context
I once had a client email me saying, “I have $300 and I need you to use that to get my new business to the number one spot on Google’s search results page as fast as you can.”
Once I recovered from the initial surprise of the request, it dawned on me just how many bright, highly capable business owners simply aren’t aware of how digital discovery actually works. Unless you have a bottomless ad budget to outspend the competition on pay-per-click Google Ads, getting to the top isn’t something you can buy overnight. It takes a strategic, consistent plan executed over time.
And right now? The way search engines and discovery work is undergoing the single biggest evolution in digital history.
If you’ve been feeling like the ground is shifting under your feet, you aren’t imagining it. But here’s the good news: this is actually an incredibly exciting moment for authentic, intentional, mission-driven businesses.
We’re moving away from the old era of what we used to call “robotic keyword-stuffing” and stepping into an era of “mindset-to-mindset” matching.
In other words: you don’t just want any random website visitor—you want the exact client whose mindset matches yours.
If you’ve felt like your website or digital footprint isn’t reaching the right people lately, it’s not just you. Search engines haven’t just updated their algorithms; they’ve completely changed how they discover, evaluate, and connect businesses with human beings.
The “Why Am I Not #1?” Dilemma
Every month, I get calls from consultants, retreat leaders, and business owners who say something like:
“I just typed ‘best (fill in the blank with your own business)’ into Google, and my site isn’t showing up at the top of the page! Why aren’t I at the top of the results?”
It’s completely understandable to feel frustrated when you’ve poured your heart, soul, and expertise into a brand and search results don’t immediately reflect your hard work. But search today doesn’t work like it did in 2025.
Google isn’t just scanning for an exact string of text anymore.
With AI Overviews and generative search engines, search acts much more like a high-level digital matchmaker. When a prospect asks a search engine or AI for a recommendation, the system analyzes two things simultaneously:
- The Searcher’s Contextual Mindset: Their browsing habits, past queries, values, and underlying intent.
- Your Brand’s Full Digital Footprint: Your background, reviews, authority, and cross-platform presence.
The goal of today’s AI search is to synthesize all of that information and present the user with a recommendation tailored specifically to their lifestyle and expectations. In other words, you don’t just want any random website visitor—you want the exact client whose mindset matches yours.
Here’s a good place to add a p.s: don’t use ChatGPT to do the work of Google. Google is still the go to for search because it’s job is to stay current, combing the entire world wide web for the most recent updates. That’s not how ChatGPT works. But that’s for another blog.
Here’s an example of matching mindset in search:
Imagine you own a luxury vacation rental where you’ve invested heavily in custom architecture and high-end, luxury bedding. Old SEO would focus on ranking for ‘cabin rental in Montana.’ Modern AI search looks deeper: it recognizes a prospect whose browsing patterns and travel preferences signal a desire for high-end comfort, and matches them directly with your site because your digital footprint clearly communicates that elevated experience.
Here’s another example from an existing client:
Imagine an executive, therapist, or author who is burnt out, sitting at their desk at 10:00 PM, and typing into a search engine: “I feel like I’ve lost my voice and I need a retreat where I can learn to write without being judged.”
Old SEO would look for exact keywords like “writing retreat Montana” or “book writing workshop.” If those exact words weren’t stuffed onto a homepage, the site wouldn’t show up.
Modern AI search operates on mindset and intent. It looks at the seeker’s deeper context—someone looking for deep emotional safety, expert literary guidance, an intimate setting, and a transformative space to bleed on the page—and matches them directly with Laura Munson and Haven.
Why? Because Haven’s digital footprint doesn’t just list dates and prices; it communicates sanctuary, mentorship, and deep human connection. AI connects the dots between a seeker in need of refuge and a renowned author who built a home for their story.
The Instagram Mirage
Using social media as a bridge
A lot of business owners fall into the trap of relying almost exclusively on Instagram, hoping a steady drumbeat of reels and posts will carry the entire weight of their marketing. While social media is fantastic for community, it’s only one piece of a much larger strategic ecosystem.
Social media platforms are rented land.
They’re fantastic places to meet prospective clients and build initial awareness, but you don’t own the property, you don’t control the algorithm, and you can’t export the relationship.
True brand equity means using social media as a bridge
inviting people off the noisy public street and into your own digital home, where your story, your authority, and your direct client relationships actually belong.
Plus, here’s a secret about video content: Google’s AI is incredible at combing through, transcribing, and indexing video audio—if it can actually find it. Don’t just let your videos sit isolated on Instagram. Take those exact same reels and upload them to a dedicated YouTube channel. YouTube is owned by Google, meaning your video content suddenly becomes indexable, searchable, and far more likely to feed into AI recommendations.
Take testimonials and Google reviews as another example. I recently spoke with a business owner who had hundreds of glowing, 5-star reviews, but was terrified that two off-hand negative reviews would ruin their credibility. Because of that fear, they hesitated to show reviews on their website and avoided setting up a Google Business Profile altogether.
This is where missing the big picture can inadvertently hurt your visibility.
AI search models heavily weigh verified local profiles, authentic user feedback, and third-party citations when deciding who to recommend in an AI summary. A sea of genuine 5-star praise completely drowns out those two unfair negative reviews—and that Google Business Profile is precisely the kind of structured proof AI needs to say, “Yes, this business is real, trusted, and worthy of a recommendation.”
Every Single Detail Matters (Yes, Even Your Image Files!)
When I talk about your “digital footprint,” I mean everything. Every asset you have is useful and contributes to how search engines and AI view your brand.
For example: never upload an image to your website that’s titled IMG_000235.jpg.
To an AI crawler, IMG_000235.jpg is completely invisible noise. Instead, give that photo a descriptive file name and alt tag that accurately reflects how it represents your product, service, or business (e.g., luxury-montana-writing-retreat-workshop.jpg).
When AI can clearly read the context behind your images, text, and structure, it builds a high-definition picture of who you are. Every detail matters.
One Size Fits None
I don’t do cookie-cutter strategies. I never have.
What works for a boutique luxury consultant won’t work for a high-volume service brand. One founder’s Pinterest strategy might be a total waste of time, while another brand would thrive on LinkedIn, YouTube, or X.
However, regardless of which channels fit your specific business best, digital alignment is non-negotiable.
Your domain name, website branding, and social media handles across every platform must be identical or as closely matched as humanly possible. When your digital identity is uniform, AI engines can scan the web and instantly understand who you are, what you offer, and who you serve.
IMPORTANT: If your identity is fragmented across mismatched handles and abandoned accounts, AI gets confused—and a confused algorithm simply passes you by.
The Strategic Roadmap: How to Set Yourself Up for Success
Navigating this shift requires better strategic tools, deeper analysis, and a big-picture mindset. You can’t shortcut it, but you can build a strategy that stands the test of time.
If you’re looking to elevate your digital presence right now, here’s where to start:
- Audit Your Digital Footprint: Ensure your domain is clear, easy to type, and perfectly aligned with your social handles across the web. Give AI a clean, unified map of who you are.
- Optimize Your Visual & Written Assets: Name your images purposefully and adopt “answer-first” formatting—clearly state what you do in the first 1–2 sentences of your core website pages.
- Repurpose Your Video Assets: Don’t let your video content die on Instagram. Upload your short-form videos and client stories to YouTube so Google’s AI can comb, transcribe, and index your visual content for search.
- Publish Strategic FAQs & Clear “About” Copy: Write an explicit, factual About page and a clear FAQ section on your site. AI models love straightforward answers and clear founder bios when synthesizing recommendations.
- Leverage Owned Long-Form Content: Publish your deep-dive articles, newsletters, or essays on your website blog, LinkedIn, or Substack. (Caution note: If you use Substack, make sure your Substack handle and publication name match your website domain and social handles! Don’t let a mismatched handle confuse search engines and split your brand identity.)
- Gather Authentic Testimonials (and Video!): Collect real stories from real clients. Verifiable social proof is the ultimate currency for building trust with both real humans and search engines.
- Lock Down the Basics First (Especially for Startups): If you’re launching a new venture, secure your domain name and lock in all matching social handles before you even start building your website. Setting up a clean foundation from day one saves immense headache later.
Feeling Overwhelmed? Start Here (It Takes 2 Minutes)
If you’re reading this and feeling a wave of overwhelm, take a deep breath.
As a business owner, you’re already wearing ten different hats. You don’t have time to pull an all-nighter restructuring your entire web presence, and you certainly shouldn’t feel like you have to do it all at once.
If you want a simple, immediate starting point today, do this one thing:
Open a browser window in Incognito mode and type your business name into Google.
Why Incognito? If you search normally, Google recognizes your device and personal search history—and because you visit your own site and social pages regularly, it skews your results to look better than they might actually be for a stranger. Incognito strips away that personal bias and gives you an honest look at what a prospective client sees when they look for you.
Look at the first page:
-
Does your correct domain appear near the top?
-
Are your social handles showing up?
-
Do you see a verified Google Business Profile on the side?
Take a quick screenshot of what you find. You don’t have to fix everything today, but knowing where you stand is the very first step toward building a real strategy.
Ready to Claim Your Spot in the New Digital Era?
The era of quick-fix SEO hacks is officially over—and honestly, that’s something to celebrate. When you take the time to build a clear, aligned, and strategic digital footprint, you stop chasing algorithms and start attracting the exact clients and opportunities you were built for!
